ToggleA sacred story from Sanatan Dharma
This is a short sacred story from Sanatan Dharma, passed down through devotion and faith.
It is meant to be read slowly in one sitting, not as an analysis or debate, but as a devotional retelling that touches the heart and reminds us of timeless spiritual values.
The sacred story of Vrinda is one such devotional story from Sanatan tradition.
Why Tulsi is loved in every home
Tulsi lives quietly in many homes, yet her presence fills life with peace, purity, and calm energy. People offer water to her every morning, light a small diya, and pray with love.
Tulsi is not just a plant. She is a mother, a blessing, and a living symbol of devotion. Behind her presence lies a very moving and sacred story. It is the story of Vrinda and how she became Tulsi Mata.

Who was Vrinda
Vrinda was born in a rakshasa family, but her heart always belonged to Bhagwan Vishnu. From childhood she worshipped Him with complete faith.
When she grew up, she married Jalandhar, a mighty danav king born from the ocean. He was brave, strong, and respected. Vrinda served him with purity and love. Their marriage was built on devotion, loyalty, and trust.
The War and Vrinda’s Vow
One day a fierce war began between the devas and the danavas. Before leaving for battle, Jalandhar looked at Vrinda with hope.
She touched his feet and promised that she would remain in prayer until he returned safely. Jalandhar rode into the battlefield, while Vrinda sat in deep tapasya, chanting the name of Vishnu with full surrender.
Her devotion became so powerful that no weapon could harm Jalandhar. The devas felt helpless and afraid.
The Devas need help
The devas went to Bhagwan Vishnu and begged for protection. At first, He refused to deceive His true devotee Vrinda. But when the balance of the universe itself was at risk, He agreed to intervene.
The Divine Intervention

Bhagwan Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda. Overwhelmed with joy, she rose from her prayer and touched His feet.
In that moment, her vow was broken. Jalandhar lost his divine protection. On the battlefield, he was struck down, and his severed head fell inside the palace where Vrinda stood.
Vrinda’s pain and the curse
When Vrinda realized the truth, her heart shattered. With tears in her eyes, she told Vishnu that the trust of a pativrata had been broken. In deep pain, she cursed Him to turn into stone. Instantly, Bhagwan Vishnu became a Shaligram.
Mata Lakshmi wept and begged for forgiveness. Seeing her sorrow, Vrinda’s heart softened. She lifted the curse, and Vishnu returned to His divine form.
The birth of Tulsi Mata
Unable to live without her husband, Vrinda placed Jalandhar’s head on her lap and gave up her life in the sacred fire.
Where her ashes fell, a fragrant plant grew. Bhagwan Vishnu appeared and declared that she would now be known as Tulsi Mata and would be worshipped in every home.
No prayer would be complete without her presence. He promised to remain with her forever as Shaligram.
A Gentle reflection
The sacred story of Vrinda and Tulsi Mata teaches us the depth of devotion, purity, and surrender.
Vrinda’s loyalty protected her husband, and her sacrifice transformed her into a living symbol of bhakti.
Tulsi reminds us that true devotion does not fade with time. It becomes eternal.
